Fear, Doubt, Hope Courage: Surviving Breast Cancer

The phone rang at 5:00 on Friday, July 2, 2010- the start of the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The nurse spoke those two words that EVERYONE fears. Invasive Carcinoma. Typical feelings emerge. Shock. Horror. Disbelief. Doubt. Confusion.

Diagnosis- Stage 2 ductal carcinoma in-situ, high grade. Treatment plan- lumpectomy, mammosite radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy.

During this time, I had strong support from my husband, family, friends, neighbors, associates, acquaintances. Discussion about my disease, my treatment, my well-being was continuous. This was great comfort. However, I was still full of an endless amount of indescribable thoughts and emotions that I had to express, but words could not communicate. I found the only way to release these feelings was the act of making art. The creative process was, and is, my solace, my saving grace against cancer.
